Instagram Updates: Reposts, Maps and a New Way to Connect with Friends

Menlo Park, CA – Instagram is introducing a suite of significant updates designed to enhance user interaction and content sharing on the platform. In a move to foster closer connections, the social media giant is officially launching a native “Repost” feature, a revamped and interactive “Map” experience, and a dedicated “Friends” tab in Reels. These updates aim to make it easier for users to share content they love and engage more meaningfully with their inner circle.

Share Your Favorite Content with the New “Repost” Feature

Long requested by users, Instagram is finally rolling out a built-in “Repost” feature for both feed posts and Reels. This eliminates the need for third-party apps or cumbersome workarounds to share content from other users.

When you come across a public post or Reel you want to share, a new “Repost” icon will appear alongside the like, comment, and share buttons. Tapping this will share the content directly to your followers’ feeds. What makes this feature unique is the ability to add your own thoughts or commentary in a “thought bubble” that overlays the reposted content.

All your reposted content will be conveniently aggregated in a new “Reposts” tab on your profile, making it easy to revisit and see what you’ve shared. This feature not only allows for seamless content amplification but also provides a new way for users to express their interests and personality.

Discover and Connect with the Interactive “Instagram Map”

Building on its existing map functionalities, Instagram is introducing a more dynamic and personal “Map” experience. This updated feature allows users to voluntarily share their last active location with a select group of friends, offering a new way to see who’s nearby and what’s happening around you.

The new Instagram Map, accessible at the top of your Direct Messages, will display the locations of friends who have opted into sharing. Beyond just seeing friends’ locations, the map will also highlight geotagged posts, Stories, and Reels, creating a rich, explorable interface of content from your network and creators you follow.

Privacy remains a key consideration, and users will have granular control over who can see their location and can toggle the feature on or off at any time. This move is seen as a direct response to the popularity of similar features on other platforms and aims to facilitate real-world connections.

A Dedicated Space for Friends’ Interactions in Reels

To make content discovery more personal, Instagram is introducing a “Friends” tab within the Reels feed. This new section will exclusively showcase Reels that your friends have liked, commented on, or reposted.

This curated feed provides a more intimate and relevant viewing experience, moving away from algorithmically suggested content to focus on what your immediate circle is engaging with. It’s a direct way to see what’s making your friends laugh, what they’re inspired by, and what’s sparking conversation within your community. This feature aims to make scrolling through Reels a more social and connected experience.

These updates collectively signal a renewed focus from Instagram on fostering genuine interactions and strengthening the social fabric of the platform. By making it easier to share, discover, and discuss content with friends, Instagram is empowering users to connect in more meaningful ways. The new features are rolling out globally, so be sure to check your app for the latest updates.
